My acrylic work is the most challenging process in all my artwork. It takes more time, energy, supplies, and artistic vision than any other medium I work with. I start off with a detailed, proportion-focused sketch that I try to make as accurate as possible. After I’m happy with the sketch, I dive in with the darkest tones to understand where my shadow is going to live. I then work my way up to the lightest tones and highlights. From there, it is a battle to decide when the piece has enough texture, light balance, and range of strokes to call it done. My acrylics end up being very chunky, loose, and a little less realistically-rendered than my other styles. Acrylics are my favorite medium. They were my main focus in college. They stress me out and they make me more inspired to create when compared to anything else. Acrylics on canvas are like a challenging lover that I will continue to dedicate my life to through thick and thin.
