Watercolor on Board

I honestly didn’t touch watercolors as a medium in college where I really developed my style. I thought of them as kind of single-noted and they behaved so differently than the bold and saturated acrylics I was used to using in my “blocky” style. As I expanded my commission business, I started to get more requests for something a little simpler and classic and my watercolor style was born. As I dove into work orders, I discovered that watercolors are greatly underrated. The layers and translucent nature of washes over washes became a challenge that I LOVED conquering in clients’ faces and animals (animal fur) etc. I realized that my “chunky” style really translated to watercolors and helped me to figure out “building” pieces with this medium too. I start these in a similar way to my acrylics on canvas, I lay down a proportional, detailed sketch, start with the darkest tones and work my way to the lightest ones. Watercolors are much faster and sometimes have empty space that the eye completes and I think that is part of what makes them so successful and my most popularly-ordered medium.
